“The most common side effect is that Viagra, which is the same medication as Viagra for men, has more side effects than Viagra,” says study author Dr. John D. MacCallum of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “However, if the patient were taking Viagra or another generic, the patient would need to take Viagra every day for the entire time he’s taking it.”
The study was led by Dr. MacCallum, a professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and his team presented the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in men. Patients who took Viagra, or any other generic drug, or another generic drug were asked to take a pill at a specific time every day for 12 weeks. Patients were also asked to take a pill once a week for at least two months to see if they would experience any improvement in their symptoms after taking Viagra.
“This is a highly sophisticated, highly individualized study that would have us believe that the side effects were not that big of a problem,” says Dr. MacCallum. “In our study, we found that in men taking Viagra, the side effects were much more serious than those seen in men taking other generic drugs. This is an important finding for the health care community, because the side effects of Viagra and other generic drugs could be fatal.”
Dr. MacCallum and his team wanted to show that Viagra can cause a variety of side effects. The study was conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and researchers from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, and the University of Texas at Austin, helped them understand the mechanisms of Viagra and other generic drugs. “We found that if patients took Viagra, they had some of the most severe side effects that we would expect to see in men taking other generic drugs,” he says.
The team also wanted to show that Viagra can cause an increased risk of sexual dysfunction, including impotence or erectile dysfunction. They began by analyzing data from a large clinical trial conducted by the National Institutes of Health and published in theJournal of the American Medical Association.

The study authors acknowledge that their analysis did not include data from healthy participants and that they used the results of the study to inform future studies. “We were surprised by the results of the double-blind, placebo-controlled trial because it was so small,” says Dr. “We would anticipate that the study would be published soon, but we are hoping for the next large study to be conducted on the safety and efficacy of Viagra.”
The researchers hope to conduct the study soon.
